rushy Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Hi, this may have been covered before, but i thought i'd start it anyway. After all the heavy rain over the weekend, my car has developed a mind of its own. Firstly, went out to the car to find it was unlocked and both front electric windows open. Car wouldn't lock and windows wouldn't shut, either by switch or global open/close. Looked under passenger seat to find a big pool of water!! got rid of water and tried my best to dry out under the seat. Since then, car still wont lock with the key, drivers window wont shut at all, passenger window will shut with switch, but when it reaches the top it re-opens half way. If you try and global close the windows, the passenger window shuts fine. However, when you turn the car off, remove keys and open the drivers door, the passenger window opens!! Seems like the car has a mind of its own!! lol Any ideas?????????? Thanks in advance Quote
Guest wolfie Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 you say you dried up under the seat, but have you removed the central locking ECU and dried it out? and more to the point have you stopped the water ingress? Quote
rushy Posted May 31, 2007 Author Report Posted May 31, 2007 Hi, Yes have just taken it out tonight and put it in the airing cupboard to try and dry it out. Quote
rushy Posted June 1, 2007 Author Report Posted June 1, 2007 I put it in the iring cupboard over night, and also checked the circuit board. Looked a little fuzz with dried water etc. Gave it a bit of clean and re-fitted. Car will now un-lock, but not lock, passenger window is almost back to normal, but still nothing from drivers window at all. Have even tried shorting the window switch to try and operate it that way. ????????????????? Quote
Guest wolfie Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 have you tried the global closing on the windows? that way you can tell if the window does still work? if it doesnt then you may have a seperate issue with that window? as for the locking? again try to lock the doors via the passenger door and rear hatch lock! and if that doesnt work then it's looking more than likely that the central locking ECU has taken one bath to many! Quote
rushy Posted June 1, 2007 Author Report Posted June 1, 2007 (edited) Have tried the global, and that now operates the passenger window only. The central locking ecu is slowly coming back to life, although not totally perfect, I can at least lock and unlock the car. Is there any way to manually close the drivers window? anything similar to the way you cn do the sunroof if the switch fails? I've been playing with the switch, and I can hear a type of click noise when you try and open or shut the windows, so am guessing that the motor is caput!!! Edited June 1, 2007 by rushy Quote
rushy Posted June 3, 2007 Author Report Posted June 3, 2007 anybody??? i'm not too happy not driving the car seeing as i cant shut the window! lol Quote
Guest wolfie Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 have you tried bypassing the switch? sticking a supply straight onto the up direction connection? or doing a mo4 special and remove the glass from the mech and propping it to hold it shut? Quote
rushy Posted June 3, 2007 Author Report Posted June 3, 2007 I've got the door card off, and have tried forcing the glass back up, can get it to move about an inch, then goes no further. Will try by-passing the switch tomorrow, but as I mentioned before, when shorting the switch to try and make it go up, all I can hear is a relay type click coming from the motor. Quote
Chris Jones Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 Dont want to send you on a wild goose chase but hav you checked the wirring between the doors and the door pillars they are prone to breaking. I have also had a loose plug as well Quote
dodge Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 Hi As Chris says, check the cables in the rubbber gaiter between door and door post.I had to repair mine today as the drivers window had stopped working and the passenger window would only go down which ever way you pressed the switch.Found 2 cables broken in the drivers door to post area, repaired them and now ok.Also found central locking fuse blown but that may have been an own goal! Recommend disconnecting the batt before you start fiddlin. Happy days. dodge Quote
John W VR6 Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 Hi Rushy, just had a similar problem with my V6, ie windows and locks all over the place. The water was entering the car due to blocked drains in the scuttle. these can be cleaned properly by removing the inner wheel arch covers to give you access, then using some old metal coathanger, etc, to clean them out. I also took the rubber flaps off as well. The control box printed circuit i cleaned first with wd40 and an earbud, then contact cleaning spray i bought from Maplins. Once dry it all worked ok. Re the window switches, they can be taken apart, slowly! and the contacts and circuit can be cleaned with more contact cleaner and earbuds. It worked for me, good luck. 2.8 v6 Ghia 97 :P Quote
azzbamf Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 i had the same problem with the drainage john my circuit board underneath the passenger seat was fizzing in the water luckily if i just unplug 1 of the multi pinned connectors i have no probs but have to lock the doors manually and the interiour light does not come on unless switched on. i found if you put your windscreen wipers on and switch the key of when the wipers are on the outer edges of the windscreen you can just squeeze your hand in to were the drain is which on mine is in the left hand corner just below the wiper mechanism i pulled a small twig and loads of leafes come up with it followed buy a gush of water Quote
zorgman Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 hiit still may be the controller, try this method which is proven to work on circuit boards.take unit out of car and remove the circuit board from the plastic box, give the board a rinse under warm water to remove the white fur that you get off rain water. now give it a good shake and blow off the excess water that is there (i use my compressor for this) now get a hair dryer without wife/girlfriend seeing and on the low setting warm/blow the moisture off untill its dry (this is a must) the board will be warm now so get hair spray from same room as dryer and give it a light spray.put back together and give it a try works nearly everytime i use this method for taxi radios that lie under seats that get wet Quote
John W VR6 Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 Thats a good tip for the future, i've got a sunroof as well, so it might be agood idea to check the drains on that as well. 2.8 v6 Ghia 97 :18: Quote
andrew welsh1958 Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 any pictures of where rain gullys that get blocked are please? Quote
DjSwampy Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 The one that was blocked on mine was just above the battery, under the windscreen, there is a little flap which you need to push open to drain it. I found that if you take off the plastic wheel arch cover then you can get to the other side of the flap and pull out the crud. Quote
